Welcome to the Tanzanian National Electoral Commission Preparatory Group. Tanzania will hold a presidential election in 2025, and the Electoral Commission has begun preparing election materials.
Election situation: Tanzania has a population of 65 million. According to the Electoral Commission Preparatory Group, it is expected that the number of registered real-name voters will exceed 8 million, including more than 200,000 overseas voters. It is planned to set up 20,000 polling stations and voting will begin in October 2025.
Electoral system: Tanzania is a presidential republic with elections held every five years. The president is elected by a simple majority vote, and the candidate with the most votes is elected. According to Article 39, paragraph 1 of the 1977 Constitution, candidates must be Tanzanian citizens by birth, at least 40 years old, nominated by their political party, eligible to be a member of Parliament or a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives, and have no relevant convictions such as tax evasion.
Current situation: The current president is Samia Suluhu Hassan. Her ruling party, the Revolutionary Party (CCM), won more than 98% of the seats in the 2024 local elections, showing the party's strong power in Tanzania, but the opposition party Chadema strongly criticized the local elections, accusing them of unfair disqualification of candidates and manipulation of election results.
