At polling stations, some equipment is used during the voting process, while other items continue to be useful after voting has ended. In The Gambia, polling normally closes at 5:00 p.m., but voters who are already in the queue are still allowed to cast their ballots. Afterward, polling staff need to check seals, open the ballot drums, organize the voting tokens, count them with counting trays, and complete the relevant records. In other words, the work at the polling station does not end immediately when voting closes. When staff still need to handle documents and election materials, portable lighting can be very useful if the available lighting is insufficient. For this reason, our Gambian client customized a batch of portable LED lanterns from us for supplementary lighting at the polling site.

This portable lantern features a compact yet practical design. It has a black plastic body, a transparent lampshade, folding metal handles, and multiple LED bulbs inside. Its cylindrical collapsible structure keeps the lantern compact for storage, while pulling it upward exposes the lighting section and provides a wider illumination area. The lantern is approximately 13–14 cm high when collapsed, 18–20 cm when extended, and about 9 cm in diameter. It can be placed directly on a worktable or carried and hung using the metal handles. Compared with a flashlight that only illuminates in one direction, this surrounding LED lighting design is more suitable for polling station setup, document checking, vote counting, and organizing election materials. Its compact size, easy portability, and convenient storage also make it a practical piece of support equipment for polling stations.
